Museum of Geology, Ipoh, Perak

The Museum of Geology was founded in 1957 with the laying of the foundation stone of the building by the Viceroy of Perak, Raja Idris Shah Ibni, the late Sultan Iskandar Shah. This museum is part of the Department of Minerals and Geosciences complex and plays an important role as a centre for geology and geosciences learning and education in our country.

Step inside the Museum of Geology, and you will be amazed by the interesting design and arrangement. The museum's exhibition space is divided into seven zones, A to G, with an easy-to-understand storyline to add to your geological knowledge. The storyline begins with the structure and characteristics of the earth's geology, earth history, displays of various geological specimens, uses, mining, and exploration of minerals, and ends with a story about how geology can contribute to human wealth and welfare.

Collection

The Museum of Geology collects a unique collection of various types of valuable and semi-precious fossils, rocks, minerals, and gemstones from within and outside the country. The museum also exhibits several interesting samples of cassiterite (tin ore) found in tin mines in the Kinta Valley, Perak, as well as dioramas of various methods of tin ore mining that are now preserved as national heritage. Models and 3-D graphic illustrations regarding the contribution of geology to the development of major infrastructure, the development of groundwater sources, and the promotion of Malaysia's geological heritage as a tourism product are also presented in this museum.
