The Department of Mineral and Geoscience Malaysia was established on 1 July 1999 through the merger of the Geological Survey Department and the Mines Department to strengthen and coordinate national mineral and geoscience functions.

Published and available geological, mineral and geoscience reports or maps are supplied within 1 day after an application is received. Available unpublished materials are supplied within one week, while available digital information is supplied within 3 days.
JMG provides expert services upon request in areas such as geological mapping, mineral investigation, groundwater investigation, geophysical investigation, engineering geology investigation and environmental geology investigation.
A review of a mineral export application is provided within 5 days from receipt of a complete application with the required documents.
A Mineral Ore Licence is issued within 30 days from receipt of a complete application.
A tin concentrate transport permit is issued or renewed within 1 hour, subject to a complete application and compliance with the required conditions.
JMG provides mineral commodity information, conducts mineral exploration, assesses mineral reserves and production, and provides technical input that supports orderly and sustainable growth of mineral-based industries.
