  1. Kementerian akan membentangkan kertas cadangan Projek Pengukuhan Peta Bahaya Seismik Malaysia pada awal 2026 bagi pertimbangan kerajaan.

  5. Fasa 2 Projek Penambahbaikan Perkhidmatan Gempa Bumi dan Tsunami melibatkan pengukuhan 12 stesen seismik, pembinaan dua stesen baharu di Segamat dan Muar, serta naik taraf empat stesen di Johor.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Ministry will table a proposal paper on the Strengthening of the Malaysia Seismic Hazard Map Project in early 2026 for consideration, said Acting Minister Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani.

He said the update would include studies on mapping active faults and installing new benchmark fault movement stations, with the scope expanded to cover states identified as having fault zones or those at risk of geological disasters such as earthquakes.

"The Department of Minerals and Geoscience Malaysia (JMG) published the Malaysia Seismic Hazard Map in 2017, based on earthquake data from that year and earlier.

"The local tectonic geological information considered includes active faults in the states of Sabah, Sarawak, Pahang, Selangor, Terengganu, Negeri Sembilan and Perak.

"From a technical standpoint, a map that is more than seven years old should be reviewed to ensure that engineering standards and development planning remain aligned with the latest risk information," he said in a written parliamentary reply.

Johari said the Malaysia Seismic Hazard Map serves as a reference for the design of structures and buildings.

"The seismic hazard map remains relevant but should be updated periodically," he added.

He was responding to Muhammad Islahuddin Abas (PN–Mersing), who asked about the extent to which the ministry had updated the national seismic hazard map based on the latest earthquake data in Segamat, Johor.

Johari said the ministry, through the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia), currently operates 80 seismic stations at strategic locations nationwide, with seismic data transmitted via satellite communication lines in real time.

He added that MetMalaysia also receives real-time seismic data from 323 international seismic stations.

"Under Phase 2 of the Earthquake and Tsunami Service Enhancement Project in the 13th Malaysia Plan, the initiative will involve strengthening 12 seismic stations, constructing two new stations in Segamat and Muar, and upgrading four existing stations in Johor to improve detection capabilities for low-magnitude local earthquakes," he said.
