{gspeech language=en} PREVENTIVE MEASURE: The Minerals and Geoscience Department has dug 40 wells nationwide in the past four years

PAGOH: THE Minerals and Geoscience Department (JMG) has dug 10 wells for fire prevention in peat soil areas in the state.

The wells are also meant for domestic and agricultural water use. JMG Director-General Datuk Yunus Abd Razak said the wells were located in areas such as Pengerang, Pontian, Kota Tinggi, Batu Pahat and Muar. He said six of the wells were meant for fire prevention in peat soil areas.

"There are another three wells in Pulau Sibu, Pulau Pisang and Kampung Sawah Laku in Muar which are meant for domestic use," he said during the hand over of the well in Kampung Sawah Laku, Bukit Kepong, here, recently.

He added that a well had also been dug in Air Hitam for agricultural water use. He said the wells were dug under the Peat Soil Area Fire Prevention Programme in collaboration with the Environment Department, Fire and Rescue Department, and Drainage and Irrigation Department.

"Each well can produce 151,416 litres of water per day and cater to the water needs of more than 700 people," he said. He said the department had dug 40 wells nationwide over the past four years.

"Each well costs between RM90,000 and RM150,000," he said.

State Agriculture and Agro-based Industry committee chairman Ismail Mohamed said the 106m deep well at Kampung Sawah Laku would benefit households with low water pressure problems. Ismail, who is also Bukit Serampang assemblyman, said households in Maokil and Bukit Kepong often faced water disruptions due to low water pressure.

"I hope the well will bring benefits to the locals, especially when there is a water shortage in their area," he said.

Also present was state JMG Deputy Director Nizarulikram Abdul Rahim.
