The Kedah/Perlis/Pulau Pinang Geological Survey Department office was built in 1973 on lot 3139, HS(M) 1/1972, Mukim Mergong, Kota Setar District, Kedah. The building measures 30 ft by 60 ft and sits on a plot measuring 21,648 sq ft. Over the last 20 years, the building underwent numerous facelifts until the completion of an attractive and comfortable new office building, as it stands now.
The merger of Geological Survey Department Malaysia and Mines Department was effective on 1 July 1999 and it was the government's effort to streamline the public sectors in line with the rapid global expansion and national development. The Minerals and Geoscience Department Kedah/Perlis/Pulau Pinang office (KPPP JMG) was fully operational on 1 December 2000. Since then, many officers and supporting staff were transferred to KPPP JMG, which was then operating from Seberang Jalan Putera, Alor Setaro Besides that, new officers and supporting staff were recruited. As of 2007, the total number of staff in the office is 45. With the increase of officers and supporting staff, there was a need for a bigger and comfortable office space. Beginning of 1 August 2001, KPPP JMG shifted to a rented office in Shahab Perdana Complex while waiting for the new office to be built at the old office site.
KPPP JMG commenced operation from its own building, located at Jalan Seberang Putera, Alor Setar on the 18 May 2004. The office building was officially handed over by the Public Works Department to the KPPP JMG in mid April 2004. The construction of this new building took about 14 months to complete.
The KPPP JMG assists the state government in geoscience activities, mineral resources and land application process for the purpose of quarrying and development. The department is also responsible for law enforcement and monitoring activities pertaining to quarrying related activities in Kedah, Perlis and Penang States.
