What is the difference between a mine and a quarry?
A mine is developed to obtain minerals such as gold, tin, etc. whereas a quarry is operated to extract the rock materials such as granite, limestone etc.

I wish to apply for a piece of mining land. What is the procedure and where should the application be submitted?
Application for mining land can be made to the State Director of Land and Mines using the prescribed form.

What are meant by Mining Lease, Exploration Licence, and Prospecting Licence?
Mining Lease means the right given to carry out mining activities on the said land whereas Exploration and Prospecting Licenses mean the right to search for minerals on the said land. Exploration Licence is issued for a big area (max. 20,000 ha) and a longer tenure (max. 10 years) compared to Prospecting Licence which is for a smaller area (max. 400 ha) and shorter period (max. 2 years).

What is meant by mineral? Are sand and mineral water classified as minerals?
Mineral, according to the Mineral Development Act 1994, is defined as any substance in solid, liquid or gaseous form occurring naturally or as a result of mining from land or sea but excludes water or rock material. Sand (rock material) and mineral water are not defined as mineral.

Individuals, private limited companies or corporations that can carry out mining activities on a mining land

What laws are in force for mines and quarries?
For mines, the principal laws in force are the Mineral Development Act, 1994 and the respective state Mineral/Mining Enactment. As for quarries, it is the respective State Quarry Rules, if any.

The clearance letter to export minerals can be obtained from the nearest state office of the Minerals and Geoscience Department or at the Headquarters of the Minerals and Geoscience Department, Kuala Lumpur.

Yes, you can. Applications for rock and mineral analytical services are to be addressed to The Director of Technical Services, Minerals and Geoscience Department Malaysia, Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah, P.O.Box 1015, 30820 Ipoh, Perak. Tel: 05-5457644, Faxs: 05-5468479. Charges will depend on the type of analysis requested.

How can I obtain geological information for a particular area?
Contact the nearest JMG state office to check whether the area has already been mapped or not. Reports or maps on the areas investigated can be purchase from the state office or from JMG headquarters.

What are the reports published by JMG and how to obtain them?
JMG publishes several reports annually. They are: Departmental Annual Report, Malaysian Mineral Year Book, Directory Of Industrial Mineral-Based Industries, Industrial Mineral Production Statistics and Directory of Producers, Malaysian Mining Industry and Technical reports on investigations related to geoscience and mineral. These reports can be purchased from JMG headquarters and JMG state offices.
