The Minerals and Geoscience Department Malaysia was officially established in 1999 as a result of the merger of the geological Survey Department Malaysia and the Mines Department of Malaysia. Prior to the merger, the geological Survey Kelantan office was located in Wisma Persekutuan whereas the Mines office was located in the Kelantan State Secretariat (SUK) under the arm of the Easten Region Mines office.
The geological Survey Department Kelantan office started its operation in early 1952 and was administered by an English geologist, Sir MacDonald, who was later appointed as the Head. He was assisted by four local staffs. The pioneer office was located in Bunut Payong which later shifted to Tapak Kedai Payong (next to the Sultan Mohamad IV Stadium) at the end of 1952. In mid 1953, the office shifted again to a rented house behind the Old Post Office (adjacent to Sultan Ibrahim Police Station) and in 1971 shifted again to the old SUK office which is the MPKP now. Finally, in 1979, the office moved to the 3rd floor of Wisma Persekutuan, Jalan Bayam, 15658 Kota Bharu.
In the early days of operation in Kelantan, the role of the department is focused more on providing geoscience information to the stakeholder and government agencies, in particular via the regional geological mapping program and to assist in the implementation of the Peninsular Malaysia development projects under the Malaysia Plan.
Kelantan JMG assisted the state government in land application for the purpose of mining and quarrying, besides, as well as carrying out law enforcement and monitoring activities pertaining to the mining and mineral trade activities in Kelantan.
